Alberta RCMP is rooting for Albertans to branch out when it comes to yard safety. Property crimes are often crimes of opportunity and during the summer, yards offer new opportunities for thieves Th. e Alberta RCMP is offering words of encouragement to all Albertans when securing their yards and properties this summer. Awareness is an important part of crime prevention.
Would-be thieves are on the lookout for easy targets such as yards with tools left out, unlocked bikes, and anything easy to take. Also, yards that don’t look like they’re looked after, yards with low visibility, such as crowded with bushes and trees, and unlit properties at night. Protecting Alberta’s rural communities is a collective responsibility. Together, with local RCMP detachments, we create a strong awareness and presence of the law and help reduce crime.
Prevention tips to protect your property:
- You know to lock the front door when you leave, but did you know you should lock it when you’re in the backyard?
- Make sure to lock your bike up or put it in a secure location.
- When you’re done working for the day, ensure your tools are put away and stored securely.
- If you are going to be away from home, ask your neighbours to check on your property for the time that you’ll be gone.
- If you see something suspicious, report it to your local police! Your reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future.
- Be sure to turn on your outside lights at night. Crimes of opportunity tend to happen when thieves can’t be seen.
- If you don’t already do so when you’re done using your bike, tools, lawnmower, and scooters, make sure to put them away.
- Do you have neighbours that leave out expensive items such as bikes or tools? Talk to them and give them some pointers, when we all work together, we can prevent crime.
- Considering a driveway alarm? It is a great way to be alerted when someone enters your property. Criminals like fast easy targets and the more difficult you make it for them, the better your chances are of not becoming a victim.
This is an important reminder to check for these safety preventions every day at 9 PM before you go to bed. Following these easy routines could prevent you from becoming a victim of property crimes. RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to the police. Reports tell the RCMP where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future. Report crime online!
The RCMP are encouraging all Albertans to report eligible crimes online (select property crimes under $5,000). Reporting less serious crimes online helps emergency dispatch and frontline members focus their time on high-priority calls. It provides a convenient way to share photos to the RCMP as well. These reports assist in crime analysis, aid in establishing trends and patterns, and ultimately leads investigators to the chronic offenders. It also assists in making decisions about how and where to deploy resources. Crimes reported online will be taken just as seriously as crime reported in any other way.
