Tips to safely store and protect off-highway vehicles!

Alberta RCMP are providing tips to safely store and protect off-highway vehicles. The start of summer and the end of the school year brings beautiful weather and fun in Alberta. Albertans ride their off-highway vehicles more frequently in the summer months. Alberta RCMP reminds citizens to safely store and protect their off-highway vehicles. Awareness is an important part of crime prevention. Together, with local RCMP detachments, we create a strong awareness and presence of the law and help reduce crime.

In June 2020, 73 off-highway vehicles, including two snowmobiles, six golf carts and one riding lawn mower, were stolen in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions. This type of theft can cause a massive headache and inconvenience for the victims. It is very common for people who steal off-highway vehicles for the purpose of going from location to location and using them for all kinds of different crimes. It isn’t just having an off-highway vehicle stolen, it can also be a major threat to road safety. Together, we can put a large dent in these types of crimes. Protecting Alberta’s rural communities is a collective responsibility.

Here some tips for are keeping your recreational vehicles safe:

Friendly Reminders

Report crime online!
The RCMP are encouraging all Albertans to report eligible crimes online (select property crimes under $5,000). Reporting less serious crimes online helps emergency dispatch and frontline members focus their time on high-priority calls. It provides a convenient way to share photos to the RCMP as well. These reports assist in crime analysis, aid in establishing trends and patterns, and ultimately leads investigators to the chronic offenders. It also assists in making decisions about how and where to deploy resources. Crimes reported online will be taken just as seriously as crime reported in any other way.
