Crime Prevention On Crown Land Is A Shared Job

Crime Prevention On Crown Land Is A Shared Job

Crown land makes up a huge part of Alberta. It’s expansive and remote, making it difficult to patrol consistently, especially during peak seasons when more people are out camping, riding, hunting, fishing, and exploring.

That’s why timely reporting by community members matters. When illegal activity happens on public land or in provincial parks, the sooner it’s reported, the better the chance of reducing damage, keeping people and wildlife safe, and preventing repeat issues.

To make reporting easier, you can now use a 24/7 reporting hotline: 310-LAND (5263).

Introducing 310-LAND

310-LAND is an initiative that supports Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services to better protect Crown land. The line provides general information about Crown land and allows the public to report safety incidents and illegal activity on Crown land, including provincial parks, protected areas, and other public land.

When you make a report, conservation officers and other staff take immediate action to investigate based on your information.

Your report also helps enforcement and partners spot patterns early—things like repeat dumping locations, trail damage, or unauthorized use of restricted or private areas. Over time, those reports can become actionable intelligence that helps focus patrols and stop problems before they arise.

Together, we have a responsibility to protect Alberta so that we can all enjoy Crown land for years to come.

What Can Be Reported

A lot of Crown land issues start small before they spread. A new illegal trail becomes a network. A natural habitat becomes a dumping spot. A single abandoned trailer grows into a long-term site for squatters.

It is important to know when to call 310-LAND and when to make a report to the RCMP. Here are the kinds of signals that can be reported through this line.

Suspicious Or Illegal Land Use

  • Entering a closed area or trail
  • Clearing a new trail or access
  • Blocking a trail
  • Driving an OHV outside the tread of a designated trail
  • Off-trail motorized recreation
  • Excessive trail rutting or braiding
  • Use of drones

Property and Site Impacts

  • Leaving behind garbage
  • Dumping household or commercial waste
  • Abandoning a vehicle or trailer (longer than 24 hours on public land)
  • Unauthorized or abandoned structures
  • Cutting or clearing live vegetation without authorization/permit
  • Staying beyond maximum camping limits (14-day maximum on public land; 16-day maximum in provincial parks)

High-Risk Behaviours

  • Irresponsible or out-of-control campfires
  • Vehicles with wheels (or tracks) in a waterbody or wetland (unless on a designated trail/crossing)
  • Vehicles with wheels in water (in provincial parks)

Wildlife and Public Safety Concerns

  • Non-life-threatening public safety incidents on public land and in provincial parks
  • Dangerous wildlife encounters
  • Approaching or disrespecting wildlife
  • Park disturbances, including excessive noise

How To Report Safely And Effectively

Important: 310-LAND is not a replacement for 911. If you are in an emergency situation, call 911.

If you witness an incident or illegal activity in a provincial park, on public land, or in a protected area, call 310-LAND when it is safe to do so.

  • 310-LAND (5263) (toll-free in Alberta)
  • 1-833-310-5869 (toll-free outside Alberta)

When you call, trained operators may ask you to:

  1. Describe what happened
  2. Describe where it happened
  3. Share photos if possible and safe to do so
  4. Describe the person(s) involved
  5. Provide vehicle make and licence plate number (if applicable)

The Impact Reporting to 310-Land Makes

Reporting isn’t only about responding to one incident; it’s about reducing future opportunities for crime and damage.

Using 310-LAND supports:

  • A faster, more coordinated response to non-emergency incidents

  • Better protection for public safety on busy recreation lands

  • Protection of sensitive wildlife and environments

  • Responsible and sustainable camping and recreation

  • Better ability for enforcement teams to identify patterns

Small actions add up. Reporting early can prevent a situation from escalating or becoming a repeat problem, especially in remote areas where “out of sight” can quickly become “out of control.”

Crown land is shared land, and it is a shared responsibility to keep this land safe. 310-LAND is your way to make a report to Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services. With your assistance, they are better equipped to prevent crimes and unsafe activities on Crown land.

So, if you’re planning on a venture out to Crown land, before you head out, save the number:
